We don’t need a handful of people doing zero waste perfectly. We need millions of people doing it imperfectly.
We think Anne Marie Bonneau is on to something here so we've made this nifty zero waste calculator to show how refilling just a few everyday groceries like pasta, milk and washing detergent can have a big impact.
To see how much waste you could save, select the number of people in your household and how many groceries you refill and we'll calculate the rest.
If you're interested in how we calculated your results, here's the data used:
- Total UK household waste from The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) Report 2021 divided that by the UK population (66.65) gives 396.7 kg household waste per person.
- According to Lucy Siegel's Turning The Tide on Plastic, official statistics show 60% of household waste is plastic food packaging - this is the figure I've used even though it doesn't account for cardboard and glass packaging.
- According to Statista, on average, we purchase 45 grocery items per shop.
